Mama'Imin (Mama's Farm)

The Mama’Imin project aims to rescue and preserve Shawi local foods. Our goal is to preserve the seeds of Amazonian roots and tubers, which are currently endangered, by cultivating and planting them so that future generations can know and consume these Amazonian species. This project originates from a previous research initiative called BioKusharu, which promotes the use and knowledge of biodiversity as a mechanism for resilience and nutritional adaptation to face climate change. The coordinators of this initiative are Junior Chanchari in the community of Nuevo Progreso and Manuel Pizango in the community of 10 de Agosto in the district of Balsapuerto. The researchers from BioKusharu who are committed to supporting the Mama'Imin project are Nerita Inuma, Guillermo Lancha, Rosa Silvera, Valeria Morales, and Carol Zavaleta.

We appreciate the support of international researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada, Professor Sheri Lee Harper, and from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, Professor James Ford and Janet Cade, for collaborating in achieving the first harvest of the farm.

Guillermo, Junior, Manuel, and Nerita are Shawi health technicians, and they are in charge of the Mama'Imin project. The photo was taken by Carol Zavaleta-Cortijo at the Cachiyacu River in Shawi territory.
